Accessibility Statement
Overall the accessibility is good at Swansea University. There are no gravel roads, everywhere is tarmac or concrete. However, the campus is on a slight slope.
Below is a breakdown of the areas at this year's conference and a description of the accessibility.
Taliesin TheatreThis is where the keynotes will be taking place. Access into the foyer is through twin automatic doors. The building is accessible via steps, there is however a ramp for wheelchair users. Wheelchair users could not move up and down aisles of this ranked theatre style room.
This is a ranked theatre style room with space for two wheelchair users and there are two additional seats that can be removed. There is one row of 20 seats with flat access which could be used by non-wheelchair users who cannot manage stairs without railings. The building does have wheelchair accessible toilets.
Keir Hardie BuildingThe Keir Hardie building is situated next to the Taliesin Theatre We have ten rooms booked in the Keir Hardie Building for our workshops and Symposia. The building requires negotiation of a slope to access. There is a ramp to this modern style building. There are two lifts and the rooms are easily accessible and are spread between 4 floors.
There is only one wheelchair accessible toilet in the building. Work is underway to install 3 new wheelchair accessible toilets.
Arts HallThe Arts Hall is where the exhibitors will be and also where we will be serving morning and afternoon refreshments.
There are two entrances to the Arts Hall, one to the North of the building, and one to the South of the building. The entrance to the North has twin doors and is easily accessible. The entrance to the South has five steps with no railing. However there is a ramp for wheelchair users.
There are no wheelchair accessible toilets in the Arts Hall but the Taliesin Theatre is around a short journey away and has fully accessible toilets.
Fulton HouseFulton House is where lunch and evening dinner will be served. Access to the building is good. The eating area is situated on the first floor and there is one lift in the building. This building also has wheelchair accessible toilets.
Overnight AccommodationThe accommodation for the conference is situated on campus at the University and is a short distance from the conference buildings. There are four wheelchair accessible rooms, one of which is a double room. There are other rooms which are built to the same dimensions (which would accommodate a wheelchair) but without the usual adaptations like handrails and accessible bathroom facilities. No access to the kitchens will be available to conference delegates.
Off SiteSwansea University is situated on the South Wales coastline and is very close to the beach. Access to the beach is via a pedestrian bridge with stairs near the entrance to the campus. Several hundred metres further on is a level crossing which could accommodate people with mobility impairments.
