Keynote speakers

Marion Bogo
University of Toronto

Marion is Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, Canada and cross-appointed to the Wilson Centre for Research in Health Professional Education, Faculty of Medicine. She is the former Dean, Associate Dean, and Field Practicum Director. In recognition of her academic and practice leadership in social work education and practice she was appointed the inaugural Sandra Rotman Chair in Social Work.

Marion Bogo is the coauthor of the seminal book on field education, The Practice of Field Instruction in Social Work (1998, Columbia University Press), author of Social Work Practice: Concepts, Processes, and Interviewing (2006, Columbia University Press), and Pathways to Competence through Field Education (forthcoming, University of Toronto Press). Marion’s publications include over eighty journal articles and book chapters on field education and social work practice, and she is a member of editorial boards of international journals in social work and health. Recently Marion received the President’s Teaching Award, University of Toronto and was appointed to the Commission on Curriculum and Educational Innovation, Council on Social work Education, USA.

Marion Bogo’s research includes the development and testing of field education models, conceptualizing professional competence, and developing and testing innovative approaches to assessment of student performance. Her research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Over the past decades she has been guest lecturer and consultant to Schools of Social Work in Canada, United States, and Asia.

Ann Davis
University of Birmingham

Ann  is Professor of Social Work at University of Birmingham, and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Mental Health (CEIMH) where she works with a team of academics and service users in delivering  and evaluating innovatory teaching and learning.  She is a registered social worker  and an elected academician of the Academy of Social Sciences.   

Ann has worked in social work education and research for thirty five years. Over that time she has held a number of positions including  Head of Department and Deputy Dean at the University of Birmingham as  well as  Chair of the Association of Professors of Social Work,  Chair of the International Committee of JUCSWEC and member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Schools of Social Work.  She currently  teaches on several European social work programmes and contributes to social work education in the UK as co-chair of the SWAP (Social Policy and Social Work  subject centre) advisory group.

Ann’s research and interests are in service user involvement, poverty and mental health. She supervises social work doctoral students who are working on these topics.  Her recent  research based publications include co authoring (with Viv Cree) Social Work: Voices from the Inside (Routledge:2007) and a short  history of 100 years of social work at University of Birmingham (UoB:2008).  She is currently researching , with service users,  the impact of  learning disability services and community based mental health interventions. Ann is a founder member of Suresearch a West Midlands network of mental health service users and their allies involved in research and education.

Social Work Reform Board

The planning group are delighted that once again we can bring you a 'question time' for Friday's plenary. Last year Moira Gibb, Chair of the Social Work Taskforce responded to your questions, this year we have an excellent panel from the Social Work Reform Board.

The panel will be chaired by Ann Tate, Vice Chancellor, University of Northampton and the UUK representative on the Reform Board, the panel members will be: Hilary Tompsett, Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee and co-Chair of the Education Working Group of the Reform Board. She will be joined on the panel by her co-Chair, Julia Hassall, Head of Branch, Children's Social Care, Wirral Council and Helen Wenman, Joint Social Work Unit that supports the Reform Board.
